WHAT KIND OF APPLES SHOULD I BUY?
That depends on what you are going to do with them:
Granny Smith - Rather tart to eat out of hand but, peeled, cored and
thin-sliced, it makes an excellent pie or tart, espeially when topped with ice
cream or whipped cream.
Jonathan - good to eat out of hand, and very sweet/tart in a pie.
Macintosh - an old-fashioned apple. Not good for pies; it tends to
cook down to mush. But that very attribute makes it perfect for applesauce.
Whether pureed through a food mill or just cooked till it's chunky, this is a
family favorite.
Red Delicious - A very crisp, sweet apple, it's good to munch or spread chunks
with peanut butter.
Golden Delicious - very similar to its red cousin, the skin is a little more tender,
making it easier for youngsters to bite.
